I haven't seen the most recent issue yet, but there's apparently an article about the H&K MP7A1 written by the above editor, in which he writes-

"Like we mentioned before, the MP7A1 is unavailable to civilians and for good reason. We all know that’s technology no civvies should ever get to lay their hands on. This is a purpose-built weapon with no sporting applications to speak of. It is made to put down scumbags, and that’s it. Mike Cabrera of Heckler & Koch Law Enforcement Sales and veteran law enforcement officer with SWAT unit experience points out that this is a gun that you do not want in the wrong, slimy hands. It comes with semi-automatic and full-auto firing modes only. Its overall size places it between a handgun and submachine gun. Its assault rifle capabilities and small size make this a serious weapon that should not be taken lightly."

I haven't been able to verify, but there is a response attributed to JT that digs his hole even deeper on their Facebook page (in the comments on the photo of the gun in question, you'll probably have to dig a little.)  It pretty much reads as an excerpt from the Brady Campaign handbook with talk of "falling into the 'wrong' hands" and defending H&Ks decision to not produce a "civilian" version to keep military and police safe from such a tiny lethal device.

I don't want to buy a gun magazine that's going to preach anti-gun rhetoric at me, so until it's fixed and he's gone, they shouldn't expect me to be buying another issue (I am a little sad, the pictures and layout where nice...)

Starbucks Appreciation Day

Apparently the Brady Bunch is still miffed that Starbucks went with the "whatever the local law allows" view on carrying (especially openly) of firearms in their shops, and are trying to get another boycott of them on Valentines Day (somehow in retaliation for us gunnies making fun of their candle idiocy the other week...)

Of course this means our side will just declare a "buycott" and have another Starbucks Appreciation Day on February 14th.

I'll probably participate, despite my Coffee Snob-ish dislike of their particular coffees, and urge you to do the same.  If nothing else, it's a decent place for a lunch date, especially given the day.

December Sets Record for Gun Sales

With a few days left in December, the FBI reports the number of background checks has already topped the previous one-month record -- set only in November -- of 1,534,414 inquiries by gun dealers to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System also known as NICS. Almost half a million checks were done in just the last six days before Christmas.

Data recently released by the National Center for Health Statistics shows that in 2008, the number and per capita rate of firearm accident deaths fell to an all-time low. There were 592 firearm accident deaths (0.19 such accidents per 100,000 population) in 2008, as compared to 613 accidents (.20 per 100,000) in 2007. (h/t SayUncle)

NRA Workshop AAR/WI CCW Bills Info

Last Thursday the NRA-ILA, in conjunction with Wisconsin Force, put on a "Grassroots Workshop" at Gander Mountain.  Due to CCW legislation being recently introduced into the state house and senate, and a public hearing regarding these bills taking place across town from the meeting earlier in the day, the "workshop" turned into more of a CCW Bill familiarization class.

First off though, the turnout was great.  There was at least 100 people cramming into a room meant for about 40.

We were literally overflowing into the store.  The upside was that they mic'd the speakers, so the entire store could hear what was being said.

As far as the bills in circulation, there are three: AB126/SB90 (shall carry/licensed carry) and SB93 (Constitutional Carry.)  The NRA guys claim they support both.  While this seems a bit strange at first, what they mean is that they'd love to see both bills reconciled and combined.  Realistically, this would be a bit rough, but I tend to agree with their thought process.

More importantly, it really goes to show the bias free news you can expext from NPR............... ok, sorry, I couldn't get through that with a straight face.

I also can't help but wonder what difference it makes that two of the victims were high profile federal officials.  A similar number of gang-bangers get shot in Chicago or something and I doubt there would be anywhere near the public outcry, even if a 9 year old girl was hit in the crossfire.

ETA:  Uncle also brings up another bit of absurdity in regards to "high-capacity" magazines.  In that case, the Army should Colt.  You know how many soldiers are killed or wounded by automatic weapons fire every year?

By now I'm sure you know what happened, and all I can really say is that it sounds like a giant ball of suck for all involved.

From what I've read so far, it seems a rather crazy young man showed up with a 9mm Glock 19 equipped with a 30 round mag (amazingly the press actually reported it with correct nomenclature...) and opened up on the Congresswoman and her entourage at a public event, managing to kill a defenseless little girl along with the others.  That last little bit there is what bothers me the most.  No doubt this will, unfortunately, end up being used by the Anti's as a cry for a return to magazine restrictions.

I also noted earlier in the reports that a CCW carrier or possibly private security person may have returned fire, causing the shooter to attempt to flee. It sounds like he didn't make it very far before being stopped by bystanders until the police arrived.  Lessons to be learned reinforced this turns out to be the case.

Best of luck to the Congresswoman, and to the other wounded, and condolences to the families of those killed.

Robb sums up why I avoid debating gun banning and the like in any social situation.

The thing is, she’s a standard gun banner. Devoid of facts, bases her opinions primarily on emotions, can’t let people comment on her blog without approval, and completely lacking in any real common sense. I have no issues with other gun bloggers relentlessly poking fun at her, but for me I have other things to do, like clean the lint out of my belly button or trim my nose hairs.

If I realize I'm talking to somebody who's on the other side, I generally just change the subject or leave the AO.  It's simply not worth the time or effort really, I'm not going to change their minds, and I have enough frustration from everything else in my life.

I will admit that I did break my personal rule once, but there was much alcohol and a cute girl involved.

Apparently Jon Stewart hurt Paul Helmke's fragile feelings. I guess Stewart was on Oprah (I didn't watch it... and I can't bring myself to sit her and watch it...) and said something along the lines of-

that if all the guns were gone that there would be "a 100,000 percent increase in school bludgeonings"

Some people just can't wrap their heads around the fact that tools are just tools and that some people are just prone to violence, regardless of the tools on hand.

...but always a nice one.  Uncle mentions the FBI stats show crime is down, despite the huge upswing in gun sales in 2009.  Some more numbers over at ENDO.

Of course the anti's will cry out it's unrelated, despite the mentioned upswing in sales, the death of the DC ban, and the increase in the OC movement, all of which should have caused us to be swimming in a blood ocean (heh).  It should be real interesting to see what happens to Chicago's numbers when the 2010 numbers come out...

So I did hear about the decision just as it was released, but then I had to get in a Humvee, and they are lacking in that type of radio equipment, so everybody else has had a chance to look over things and muss and rejoice(?!) and cry into their ties.  Or if you're the VPC, just say the same stupid thing a little louder because if you say it enough, it will turn true, even if completely retarded.

Uncle does bring up a good question, "what now?"  I would love to see an attack at all the crappy NFA rules, but I'm sure that'll be a ways off, despite how awesome and right it would be.  General consensus over there is a run at the various gun registries, and that does make sense and flows and everything.  It looks like Mr. Gura already has started going after Cali, which is good.  Also registration fees (comment 15) seem like a good one.  I would still love to see a loosening (ok, erasure) of NFA restrictions in the near future... 11" suppressed AR sounds like a fun build...

Apparently the Brady Bunches Wikipedia entry had some brief hilarity.  Thankfully a screen capture has been preserved at Sharp as a Marble.  Praise his noodly appendages for keeping me from taking that sip of coffee before I embiggened.  (Also, as a cartographer, I will mention that the map on said Wiki page uses a color scheme that is the opposite of what I'd expect from their point.  You'd think they'd want the least restrictive states red...)

That's really all I've got for now, going to skim the actual decision when I'm bored and having trouble sleeping, and still need a bit of time for things to sink in and settle.

And that is why I will forever question the motives of the gun controllers. They claim to be working to prevent gun violence, but you never see them anywhere near those who are committing the violence.
