Anybody have any experience with this upper? I gather they're pretty new, but BCM is a pretty good manufacturer, and being a Wisconsin company is a definite plus.
Note to self: get that paperwork rolling...

Have you considered the "Kino" configuration 12.5"? It uses a low pro gas block under the handguards, for a carbine-length gas system and midlength handguards (and better sight radius.)

Planning to run optics, so I'm not as worried about sight radius on this one. It's not going to be built for much over 100 yards with a stubby barrel like that. Plus I want to keep it under 11.5. I'm still tossing up between the BCM or a LMT 10.5, but the BCM's got the lightweight barrel, and I want to keep the pounds down.
I'll probably end up running a MOE handguard too. Free-float is kind of silly on a short gun to me and I like the look of the MOE.
I hear good things about that upper you mentioned, or at least the company itself.
I agree with your assessment of tossing optics on that and regardless of sight radius its a 100 yard gun, comparable to a subgun. As far a handguard you may want to find something with a forward vertical grip if you don't grip the magwell as a support. High volume fire could get that thing hot, which I'll assume your looking at since it is not a long range precision weapon.
I've got a micro VFG that mounts to the MOE handguard that would act as a hand stop. It actually works really well with my shooting style.
As for heat, from what I've read the MOE's got a great heat shield, and if I ever had to shoot something enough to get it hot enough to melt or anything I should be falling back to the high explosives...
Thinking along the lines of this for those following at home.
I'm half tempted to go shorter, but the parts support of the carbine length gas system makes me happy.
