I shoot gun parts on my coffee table, and just layer 8.5x11 copier paper over the table to get an even background. I don't have a fancy lighting rig, so I just set up my projector (yes, I'm a home theater nerd too) to project pure white onto the screen for a nice even light source. I use a crappy point and shoot on a tripod to take pictures, but I set everything manually to get the best result. I also use the self timer so I don't bump the camera. Examples.
Post-processing in Photoshop is mostly cropping and adjusting the levels to enhance the whites. I prefer a natural shadow to masking the background, but I've done it both ways.
