Happy New Year!

Real exciting here.

I actually go 10-41 before midnight... maybe some drunks will wander through campus? Ha...

Bang Switch

Apex had a holiday sale, so I got a new trigger for the M&P9.  Had some 'surprise!' downtime today, so I finally got around to installing it.

It feels a lot better than the two-piece hinged guy to me, I'd say more predictable. Hopefully I can get out to the range soonish and see how it handles.

"Factory" Drop-in 10/22 Trigger

Ruger BX-Trigger

2.5-3 lb pull, about $90.  My only problem from what I can see is it still has the 'serrated' trigger face that's on the stock unit.

Still, it's pretty cool to see Ruger embracing this kind of after marker stuff as of late.

American Sniper

Clint Eastwood is a pretty fine actor, but he seems to just flat out kill it as a director.  I'm looking forward to it.

Another AR PDW Stock Option

I just saw this one today, looks like they just hit the market pretty recently.  MVB Industries has theirs available through Amazon at a price lower than the others I have seen out there.

It only has two positions (open and closed), but really, what more do you need for one of these?  It also features a neat little latch that catches the buffer inside the stock, allowing you to "shotgun" the rifle, rather than having to slide the upper forward off the lower.

I'd love to get my hands on one...

Ugh

On a positive note, when I get done working in a half hour, there's very few people to compete with for a treadmill at the gym.

On a not so positive note... bleg. Overnight shifts...

Situational Awarness Time!

Watch this video, but do yourself a favor and pause at the 30 second mark.  What would you do, and why?  What cues do you pick up and what do they tell you?

Hopefully, you'd do something very similar to what the driver did here.  No lights, not even hazards, a couple traffic cones, no reflective wear on the goblin.  You should be saying "this looks sketchy as %&^#" and getting out of dodge.

Thankfully this one has a relatively happy ending.  Two guys getting picked up strongly suggests the other goblin was ready to hop the center divider and carjack the driver while his partner distracted him on the passenger side.

Sadie Update

She managed to pick up a good case of the sniffles at the shelter, and gets grumpy when you try to comb the boogers out of her tail.  We saw the vet this afternoon and got some kitty cold meds, hopefully that helps.

Otherwise, like I've found throughout most of my life, windows make all the difference.

Shield = Sad Face

Also during last Friday's range trip, I finally got a chance to shoot a S&W Shield.  I was very excited when it came out, and thought it might be a great carry gun for me... but sadly it has the same issue as Sigs do for me.  The slide stop is directly where my thumb rests, and the slide locked back on empty exactly zero times.  It could be argued that since I have to carry a Sig at work, that I should train more to get over it, but I don't think that's the best answer.

I guess back to my original thought of just getting an M&P9c, or possibly track down an LC9s to fondle.

M&P Bitz Report

Hit up the range yesterday with one of my coworkers. Chilly, but ran some rounds through a few of our guns.  A good day overall.

I'm more than impressed with the 10-8 u-notch rear.  I don't have a timer, but it sure felt faster.  Sharp, clear, uncluttered.

The Apex/10-8 collaboration floor plates are also pretty nice. I didn't notice any difference while shooting, but I felt like I had more control during reloads.

If I have any issues in the future, I'll be sure to report them.

New Cat!

Almost two weeks ago, I got called to one of the dorms to meet with a girl who believed a van stopped in front of her and tossed out a cat.  Obviously horrible people, who we can only hope somehow get eaten by tigers if true.  Following protocol, I notified the Humane Society, and they came and took custody of said feline.

The downside was, I'm a sucker for pretty girls with long hair and blue eyes (just ask the wife...)  So, I gave the Humane Officer my name and phone number, in case nobody claimed such a cute little girl in the required seven days.

This morning I picked her up (cops can have hearts!)  She's not big on car rides.

"I've been kidnapped by a crazy guy!"

Once home she settled right down.  Lady Isadora, Duchess of Burroughs (named for the street she was ditched on, and the dorm she was found at,) or 'Sadie' for short, is apparently quite happy to be out of the pound.

She asks you don't make fun of the naked tummy. They messed with her lady bits.

Clingy cat is clingy. Hopefully Lila doesn't feel she's butting in on her game.

The poor thing was declawed in the front too, so hopefully the other two don't get too rough.  It is interesting getting kneeded by a cat without claws though.  Hopefully the others aren't complete bullies when we lift the isolation orders (small steps for now.  Somebody hisses when she's in the carrier.)

Although she could care less about the other cat smells in her little sanctuary.

I think she's just happy to have a window.

Survival Coffee

For you prepper types, don't forget the coffee!

720 servings for under $100 with free shipping and a 25 year shelf life.  I don't know if it tastes any good, but it's an important supply regardless.  I would be interested in trying some though!

Apex M&P Basepads

These should solve the problem of my M&P mags occasionally disassembling themselves.

Plus $35 gets you enough to do four mags.  I'll definitely be picking some up.

Friday, October 17, 2014

Oh the sights that you will see!

The ever evolving M&P9... I was not a fan of the sloping rear sight shape of the Trijicons that came on the gun, so I figured I'd hit two birds with one stone and try out a more simplified sight picture while I'm at it.  10-8 Performance makes some outstanding accessories for various guns, and their M&P Rear Sight fit the bill for everything I'm looking for.  Plain black, with serrations to cut down on glare, and I'm a fan of the theory of the U-notch.  Plus it has a good front edge for one-handed manipulations, something the sloping Novak style ramp lacks.

Range report and whatnot to follow.

Good Perspective

On the recent Oklahoma happenings.

"Initial reports are ALWAYS wrong. This is true at the S.O., at your house when your daughter comes home late, at the TOC overseas. They are are ALWAYS wrong, if for no more or other reason than they're incomplete."
Ask anybody who's done any work in the S2.  Sometimes you just need to wait for the cluster to un-f$%& itself before you can really figure out what happened.

The Anatomy of Shooting

At least in regards to the target's anatomy. This is a good read to follow up the link I posted a couple days ago.

In short, where you put the bullets is a crap-load more important than what kind of bullets they are.

Tactical Loitering

Another good read for the fellow LEOs out there.  In regards to an Active Shooter scenario. Hit them hard and fast, with an emphasis on fast.  How often do you see reports of a shooter capping themselves as soon as they meet armed resistance?

FBI 9mm Justification

If you haven't seen it yet, it's worth the read.  I think it mostly sums up what I've been saying for a while when people ask my opinion on the whole caliber war issue.  I can carry more and shoot it better, and it works just as poorly as any other pistol round.

Militarized Police?

Apparently one of the kids on our college radio station claimed our department is getting "too militarized" because we have an SUV.  I wonder if I could borrow County's Caiman for a day or so to put things into perspective?

I'm quickly learning the extra challenges of working for a University PD.  We don't even keep a long gun in the Tahoe because that's too scary.  We're also a tiny department, and we only have one vehicle, and we need to keep a bunch of crap in there at all times.  Combine that with Wisconsin winters, and it's darn nice to have a vehicle with high ground clearance and four wheel drive.  That's not militarization. That's just common sense.

KtKC... Plea for Donations!

Looking at the most recent standings... I can only turn to you readers and ask, "what more can I do?"  I'm sitting at like 10% of what I raised last year, which gives me a sad. :(

9mm LCR

Not gonna lie, I kind of want one.  I know my .38spc J-Frame is probably the better choice ballisticly, but there's some strange sort of appeal to this as a range toy.

5k fun run this afternoon to kick of Pointoberfest at the big local brewery.  Fairly awesome that it also happened to be co-sponsored by Pints for Prostates, another Prostate Cancer Awareness group!

5.7 vs .22mag

MAC shoots some loads into some gel to show how they do-

Somewhat surprising actually.  I would like to see something similar involving a chrono, and a comparable .22mag with a 10.5" barrel to compare to the P90, but overall very cool.

Nitro Baby

Celebrating the new furnace with some quality brews. Really just an excuse to get O'so Nitro Octoberfest.

How much do Americans love coffee?

A fairly decent amount.  I am honestly surprised that only 31% of Americans make coffee before doing anything else in the morning.

Furnace Fun

Cats are locked away in the guest "suite,"  and I'm stuck hanging out around the house while a bunch of guys do work.  It sure beats CO poisoning, but dang it makes for a boring day.

We called in a guy because the blower fan relay crapped out and the fan was running constantly.  He fixed that, but in his checks discovered the heat exchanger had a crack in it, which would do a great job of pumping exhaust fumes into the entire house.  Thankfully we were already planning to be out of town all weekend, and it's only chilly enough to just toss on a sweatshirt and be fine (50°...)

So... only replacing the furnace 5 years ahead of planned. Yay?

Somebody found out that dimensional lumber is dimensional.
As part of the judgment Lowes was ordered to pay $1.47 million in civil penalties and costs of the investigation, as well as an additional $150,000 to fund further consumer protection-related activities.
Yup, tubbafors aren't actually 2"x4", and apparently that's false advertising.
