SHOT '14

Just a couple things that really caught my eye looking through the coverage this year.

I was right about the R-51 and AAC-

Sexy and it knows it.

And Crye (of all new people) are taking a swing at breaking the shotgun mold.

Double-action revolver style from what I understand, with a 6 round magazine.  Coolness.

Impromptu Fun Show!

Headed up to Wausau to look for house stuff (filled under "success") and noticed signs for a gun show.  Granted it was a Bob & Rocco one... but eh, time to kill, pretty stuff to look at (hopefully.)  Saw some rare beasts (Kel-tech KSG and a PMR-30) and there was a multi-table slew of Class III fun to drool over.

We'll file our shopping here success as well.  Crossed another off the "would really like to have list," and snagged a 1928 manufactured Winchester 1897.  Long barrel, take-down, and all sorts of slam-fire fun.

Very seriously considering knocking a few inches off, and need to replace the stock (not trusting that crack tons,) but should be very much fun for SASS.

Mossberg Expands 20ga. SD Offerings.

Looks like they're pushing out a couple pump 20 guage shotguns complete with extended tubes and ghost ring sights.  20" barrels (a little longer than I like for a 20ga HD, but oh well...) and either 13"LOP Bantam stock or an AR15 style adjustable setup.

Personally, I like the Bantam stock better, since it's a Mossberg and their safeties suck with a pistol grip.  It looks like they also dropped the pistol grip on the fixed stock down pretty drastically, which would give you improved control, but still be able to access the tang mounted safety.

It's a pretty tempting idea, since the little 20ga Remington 870 is currently pulling "bedroom duty," but there's an appeal for a Mossberg since I shoot right, and Manda shoots left.  The improved sights would be welcome as well.

Range Photos

Fun times.  Went out to the range with Dan and another coworker yesterday to try out the micro-pistol and Dan's new toy.  It was good, aside from the sore everything.

Dan picked up a Saiga-12 (he may or may not be in the middle of reading the Monster Hunter series...)

It'll be getting a new stock sooner than later.  In the meantime, not quite my cup of tea but it still a bit of fun, and quite giggle inducing.

Dan also brought out the S&W .44mag (I'm wondering about his fascination with self punishment...)

And, on the opposite end of the spectrum, the tiny little thing pretending to be a pistol worked too.  Surprisingly accurate, despite its lack of sights (one of the few times I'm probably going to put a laser on something.)

I did come to the conclusion that with my hands, the tiny bit of concealability I loose is a worthwhile trade-off for the controlability of the finger rest extension.

Weer'd Guns

Plastic Shell

Found this at the range yesterday.

Anybody know more about this beast?  I'm curious.  Headstamp simply says "HERTER'S" and "12" and "PAT."

ETA: Should specify, definitely not a snap cap, it's hollow and smells of burned powder.

What Does NBC Have Against Remington?

NBC has had a few "stories" out lately about the Remington trigger group, and Remington is understandably not pleased with the press.  I just watched this video they put out in response on The Firearm Blog, and it seems pretty interesting.

Speaking of Shotguns

Vuurwapen Blog sums up why the Taurus Judge isn't one, and sucks at pretty much everything.  This is the same stuff I've been saying since the stupid thing came out, and am still amazed at the sales numbers.

Shot Mass

Or Slingshots Vs. The Box of Truth.  As OldPainless himself says, it's not too bad of an analogue for the old birdshot/buckshot mass argument.  The results are far from unexpected.

M26 Being Issued

2nd BCT 101st is the first to be issued the new shotgun system.

I think it's a great tool for any breaching team (and so did the design team, there's a pull-out breaching stand-off device on the muzzle.)  I'd love to get some time with one of these.

Seriously...?

I guess since most police departments and the majority of military guys have all jumped on the carbine bandwagon, we can just go ahead and stop taking Shotguns seriously.

In my opinion, if you're using MW2/3 or whatever for your marketing inspiration, you're doing something wrong (that goes for you too, Eotech... you're making me embarassed to have your sight on my gun.)

20 ga. for Home Defense

Beyond Buckshot - A Look at 20-gauge Rifled Slugs for Self-Defense in the Smoothbore Shotgun

Well worth a read.  One of the reasons I picked up a 20 gauge is knowledge similar to this quote-

When compared to a 12-gauge, the 20-gauge delivers 75% of the lead with a recoil that is 40-50% less.  This is equivalent to the ballistic force of being hit with two .44 Magnum rounds simultaneously.  In addition, the reduced recoil of the 20-gauge is conducive to accurate, rapid shots.
