Reasuring
The fact that whenever I've left the house the last few days with a bruised up side, I've had one of my little pistols tucked into my waistband. This has easily been the most "debilitated" I've felt in just about ever, and there's no way in hell I'm running away from anything, so it's nice to know I've got a better option available.

Range Photos
Fun times. Went out to the range with Dan and another coworker yesterday to try out the micro-pistol and Dan's new toy. It was good, aside from the sore everything.
Dan picked up a Saiga-12 (he may or may not be in the middle of reading the Monster Hunter series...)
It'll be getting a new stock sooner than later. In the meantime, not quite my cup of tea but it still a bit of fun, and quite giggle inducing.
Dan also brought out the S&W .44mag (I'm wondering about his fascination with self punishment...)
And, on the opposite end of the spectrum, the tiny little thing pretending to be a pistol worked too. Surprisingly accurate, despite its lack of sights (one of the few times I'm probably going to put a laser on something.)
I did come to the conclusion that with my hands, the tiny bit of concealability I loose is a worthwhile trade-off for the controlability of the finger rest extension.

Light Range Trip
The LCP works, so that's cool. Snappy little gun though.

Ow
Biking back from the coffee house and my chain popped off. Couple nice patches of road rash, a few cuts, possibly bruised rib, and trashed one of my new Fivefingers. Worst spill I've had in a long while. Thankfully I managed to land on my non-carry side, so the gun's ok, and the OtterBox once again saved the phone. Gonna curl up for a while in the AC now...

Elsie Pea Club
I joined it. This thing makes the P64 seem absolutely huge and clunky. Very much the "21st Century Vest Pocket Pistol."
It's been on "the (long) list" for a while, with the stipulation of "only if it's a deal..." Well, when scoping out the new shop in town I noticed one in the case for a good chunk off retail, despite being brand new. Turns out it's the classic "I won it at a raffle, and don't like it" trade, just plain too small for the guy's hands. (ETA :p ) We had left the store, and about halfway to the car Manda looks at me and simply says "go back and buy it, otherwise you won't shut up about it all weekend." So I did.
Picked up some cheap Russian ball to wring through it, and a box of Hornady Critical Defense. Also had an Amazon package waiting at the door when I got home containing a Desantis Nemesis Holster for it (I love Amazon Prime.) Should get out in a couple days to try it out.

Home. And New Shop in Town.
Which is cool, since we've been in a drought for dealers in the county for the better part of a decade other than big-box retailers. Had a good talk with the owner, and he went out of his way to ask MandaFern for opinions on guns for women.
I'll be going back on Monday to bring something home... (stupid Doyle...)
Dan also picked up something from there last week that's pretty sweet, and will make an appearance here when I get a chance to take some photos and try it out.

Voting
Or "should my boss keep his job?"
I've kept very quiet about the whole recall situation here, mainly because the Governor is in my chain of command, and I've always felt it tacky to publicly ridicule your boss (same reason you don't see me ragging on the POTUS.)
Tuesday's the big day, but I'll be reporting to Ft. McCoy for close to two weeks of training that morning, so I went down to the courthouse and took care of it today. Surprisingly I only had to wait for one other person to finish up before I had my turn.
I'm surprised because in Wisconsin, you don't really need any excuse to file an early absentee ballot. All week there'd been reports of lines of people out the door waiting to "avoid the lines at the booth" or "political groups at the polling places." I can't help but wonder how many people that have legitimate reasons for being unable to vote Tuesday simply didn't turn in an early ballot because of those reports.

Who?
Owls, that's who!
On Sunday the park put on a "Live Birds of Prey" presentation, so the newly minted fiancee and I took my grandmother out to see some birds.
In my opinion, they started with the stars of the show and brought the owls out first. I think owls are about the only predator that can give felines a run for their money on purpose-built killing machines. I mean they have special feathers that only exist to silence the airflow around their claws...
In order of size, they had a Northern Saw Whet that was both tiny, and greatly upset about being awake at 3 in the afternoon.
Upping the level in both size and badass looks was the Screech Owl.
Possibly one of the prettiest owls, and quite common around here, the Barred Owl-
And for the show-stealing intimidation in bird form, they had a Great Horned Owl, and he was not at all happy about being out.
It seems that they do the whole "stand up straight" thing when they're calm and relaxed. If they're feeling frisky and mad with something, that's the look you get. Thankfully they're still attracted to the flip on an SLR's mirror, and the people with the birds were kind enough to pause a little longer in front of a "real" camera.
They also had some daytime killers, photos of those tomorrow.

An Important Weekend
Took MandaFern up to the Porcupine Mountains, since she'd never been there, and it's someplace my family has been going to since about ever...
We started up at the overlook, because if you've never been up there you do need to at least see the Lake of the Clouds from the escarpment.
After that we went down to the Union Mine Trail, because it's a mile long loop with educational markers and beautiful scenery.
After that we headed down to the Summit Peak trail, went up the tower, and looped up to Mirror Lake. A good 6 mile hike or so. Not a long hike, but the elevation changes will kick your butt if you're not in shape... like us...
After a good breather and lunch we headed down to the Presque Isle unit of the park, because who doesn't like waterfalls?
I had been slightly nervous all day. Manda had commented, but I passed it off as only having had a single cup of coffee before heading out. She didn't, however, notice that I had made sure to not ask her to get anything out of my pack for me...
I made sure we lingered a bit overlooking Manabezho Falls. Shortly we were the only ones standing on the platform, and I knelt down next to her...
"So, I've been thinking... since I'm heading overseas and all, and you're very important to me... ...and there's people. Awkward..."
Another couple we coming down the stairs behind her, and didn't notice me next to her, so we moved back and sat on the bench and waited for them to take their pictures of the falls. As they turned to leave, they noticed my camera and asked if we'd like our picture taken in front of the falls.
Behold the awkward!-
So after a brief conversation about my shoes, I got back on a knee and continued...
I don't think either of us really remember what I said (other than "I want to be with you for a while... a long while... like, forever.") but the important thing is that she happily accepted the tiny object I had been hiding in my bag all day, and everything that goes with it, including me.
I've got more photos from the weekend, and they'll get posted eventually, but they just don't seem as important as these today.
