Automatic Pistol, Caliber .45, M1911

100 years ago today, the US Army adopted JMB's .45 caliber automatic pistol as the standard sidearm for it's soldiers.

The M1911 has since evolved, however the basic design remains one of the most (if not the most) pistols in use today.  Not too many other designs can claim that sort of a following (and the bulk of the ones I can think of are JMB designs of some sort...)

Not much else to say that hasn't already been said about it, so I'll just toss up some 1911 porn from the blog archives.

If you had boxed up and sent back so many Series II Kimbers that, to this day, four years later, you still have their mailing address memorized, you'd be a hater too. ;)

It's kind of become my White Whale of a gun... I will make it run, eventually...

Actually I think I just need some quality time with some buffing compound and the feed ramp, and some good mags. That and enough money to feed it...

Hi, my name is JD and I'm a Kimber hater too...

But more to the point, I do love my 1911s more than any other pistil type I've laid hands on.

I have no idea what 1911 to get this year, as much as I'd love and ANVIII from Colt, the idea of a Special Combat Carry with their tactical package and 100 year roll mark refinished in their royal blue would just be the stuff.

Fred,

Send it back to Kimber twice and they will almost certainly replace the slide with an internal extractor unit.

The external extractor (actually, I have heard that they went through as many as nine distinct variants in their two-ish year external extractor experiment) was a failure. They did it rong.

Actually haven't had much issue with the extractor yet, just iffy feeding with the mediocre Kimber mags. I've got a Wilson I'm trying out, and I want to pick up some Chip McCormicks and see how they go.

I kind of loath the idea of sending guns back... it was a tough wait with the little M&P15-22 when that blew up, plus I've got that male streak of "Damn it, I can fix it myself!" thing...

Some day I probably will break down and see about getting an updated slide though. Some day...
