No More Custom Guns for Sniper Comp

Snipers from around the world will soon shoot against each other at Fort Benning, Ga., but this year they’ll have to leave their fine-tuned rifles and high-powered optics at home. For the first time in the eleven-year history of the U.S. Army International Sniper Competition, all competitors will use the same sniper rifle and optics of equal power.
The new rules are designed to “level the playing field, so it isn’t so much an equipment race,” said Capt. Daniel Wilcox, who overseas Army Sniper School at Benning as commander of C Company, 2nd Battalion, 29th Infantry Regiment.

Personally, I think it's a good idea, or at least worth trying for a year.

If the idea is to make this a NASCAR for shooters then we can look forward to predictable results with the outcome being decided by the margin of error and randomness. That doesn't benefit anyone except the top shooters going home with a trophy each year.

If the contest were an arms race showcasing the best new tech available by premier gun and glass makers it would benefit the entire shooting community as well as providing the US Army with a glimpse into what is possible for its own snipers to buy for combat use. Having a venue to show such products would spur investment by gun amnufacturers each wanting their name on the winning product lines.

That is the whole point behind sponsorship.

I still have to agree with the CPT though, is it supposed to be a contest between what service/country has the best shooters, or the best gear?
